Homeowner Projects
The information on this page is intended for homeowners undertaking a home improvement project.
The steps and sequence below represent the review, permitting, and inspection process for a typical project. The actual process may vary, depending upon the unique attributes of a particular project. Some steps may be performed simultaneously.
A separate process applies for fences - click here.
1. | Plan Your Project | Residential Deck (PDF) Residential Garage (PDF) Basement Finish (PDF) Pool (PDF) | Detailed planning is critical to the success of a home improvement project. To help you navigate the City’s review and permitting process, we have provided guides for several project types. Click the appropriate link to the left for more information. |
2. | Complete Permit Application | Building Permit Application (PDF) Zoning Information Attachment (PDF) Site Plan Attachment (PDF) | Complete the building permit application form. You may complete the fill-able PDF document on-line and then print it to bring to the Development Center. For a residential garage, shed, deck, pool/hot tub, or wall a zoning information attachment must be included. For the convenience of homeowners, a site plan may be sketched on the optional site plan attachment in lieu of a professional site plan or survey. |
3. | Visit the Development Center | Bring the completed building permit application form and plans to the Development Center. Payment also will be required. We accept cash, checks, and Visa and MasterCard.
4. | Obtain Your Permit | Most homeowner permits can be issued within a few minutes at the Development Center counter.
5. | Call for Inspections | Inspector Contact Information | It is your responsibility to call for all required inspections (i.e., foundation, rough-in, final). Inspections may be scheduled by calling the assigned inspector at least 24 hours in advance. |
