Captain Whitman is the Commander of the West Service Area. Captain Rebecca Whitman joined the department in 1986 as a Police Intern and became a sworn officer in 1987. As an officer, Captain Whitman was assigned to Patrol where she spent most of her time working on the west side of Grand Rapids. In 1991, she was transferred to the Detective Unit where she investigated burglaries, check fraud, assaults, and homicides. She was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1996 and was assigned to night shift Patrol. Captain Whitman was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1998. As a Lieutenant, she served on night shift patrol, the Central Service Area, and as Commander of the Internal Affairs Unit. She has also served on and is currently the coordinator of the department’s Honor Guard. Captain Whitman is responsible for the creation and supervision of the Child Passenger Safety Seat Program within the department. Most recently she has served as the Administrative Lieutenant for the West Service Area. Captain Whitman holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Grand Valley State University and is a 2001 graduate of the Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command. She attended the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, graduating from Class 225 in June, 2006. Captain Rebecca Whitman has commanded the West Service Area for four years. |
